Lux Inchoate, excerpt
2015
“Lux Inchoate” is an ambient consideration of Los Angeles' ecology during a drought. A record of disintegrating frozen painted matter acted upon by atmospheric conditions becomes manifested in the surface/screen. Shot outdoors at dawn, shifting light and temperature register directly on what we see and for how long. Shadows surrender to vivid detail and the rising sun accelerates action. The painted composition reveals its making, allowing us to consider more deeply the ways in which inert matter pulses with life. Matter is at once both plastic and resilient; it is subject to change, and it changes that which surrounds it.
