Savage Jukebox In the installation, “Savage Jukebox” (2010), vintage and contemporary album covers are utilized as an exploration of identity. The overall montage of covers play off each other along a wall grid, and reveals how popular imagery has evolved over decades, and across continents, from blatantly exoticized portrayals to empowered pronouncements of individuality.  A dialogue between the images is created, where themes of gender and ethnic stereotypes emerge in a sometimes humorous and sometimes grotesque fashion. The 81 record covers that form this piece have been arranged primarily according to color and imagery, not the music. Each horizontal row of 9 records has a related chromatic range, and each row gets darker from top to bottom. I have also mixed music live from each of the 81 records to form a series of 9 mash-up audio tracks corresponding with the images and their arrangement within the wall grid. From the accompanying soundtrack, participants may choose any track (1-9). Each track corresponds to each horizontal row, for example track 1 is the top row of album covers, and so forth. Each track uses excerpts of every record in that row, from left to right, so participants can follow the images as they listen.
